Goal Setting That Works

behaviour change goal setting mindset Jan 03, 2023

Have you heard the saying..."where your mind goes, energy flows"?

Mindset is huge.  The way you think about yourself, your life, your goals & your dreams can have a huge impact on whether or not those things become actualised.

As you sit down with your new year goals & intentions over the coming weeks, try to direct your attention away from what you DON'T want, and instead focus more on what you DO want.

For example, here are a few things that I regularly hear clients say during goal setting sessions:

  • I want to lose weight
  • I want to lose body fat
  • I need less stress in my life
  • I want to eat less carbs
  • I want to have less pain
  • I want to drink less booze

But what is more potent, is when you can flip your mindset to focus more on the things that you DO want.  Research has shown us that this is much more powerful for helping you achieve your goals, for example:

  • I want to build strength
  • I want to have more flexibility
  • I want to drink more water
  • I want to invite more fun & joy into my life
  • I want to improve my sleep habits
  • I want to eat more vegetables
  • I want to prioritise rest over stress

Once you have a list of what you WANT and how you want to FEEL, then it's important to get a bit more specific with what those goals will actually look like for you, and even give yourself some time-frames if that feels good!

Human's tend to have a 'negative bias'.  For example, you might meet a bunch of new mums at a birthday party,  and have a really great time.  But if there was one bad thing that happened, or one thing that was said that was a bit off, your mind will naturally gravitate there and focus on it afterwards.

And in much the same way, we can become so focused on what we DON'T want in our lives, that we forget to bring our awareness to what it is that we DO want.

I use this same method with my nutrition coaching...if you focus on adding more real foods to each meal, you will naturally 'crowd out' the bad stuff.  Your body will become satiated with what it actually needs, so it will naturally stop craving the crap.  Where as if you focus on what you can't have or foods that you have to cut out, your body naturally starts to crave it more!

Hope this helps in some way,
